Our Heroes and SuperHeroes
At Little Hands, we honour Heroes.
Our Heroes are courageous, brave and strong. Each are battling a life-threatening illness and are doing so with dignity and grace. We believe in the importance of supporting our Heroes throughout their journey, to recognize their struggles and to celebrate their victories. We present each of our Heroes with a special t-shirt designed just for them, with the word 'Hero' across the back. Although it is only a t-shirt, we hope that it gives added strength to our Heroes as they endure their treatments and battle their illnesses. We hope they will wear their shirts with pride, knowing they have an entire community, supporting and cheering them on towards health.
We recognize the importance of supporting our Hero families. Each of our Little Hands families have become so important to us, and we hope to walk beside them throughout the course of their child's illness. Upon becoming a Hero family, we also present each member of the immediate family with a t-shirt. Each shirt says something unique, in relation to their Hero, such as 'My Daughter is my Hero' or 'My Brother is my Hero'. We celebrate milestones with our Heroes such as the completion of their treatments and often send special gifts, shirts and cakes to help mark the occasion. One of our favourite shirts to send is our 'Stronger than Cancer' shirt which we send to our Heroes who have finished their cancer treatment.
When our Heroes are in hospital, we like to send 'Smile Packages' to the Ronald McDonald House or directly to their hospital room. Smile Packages usually contain gift cards to help out the family, toys for the Hero and siblings, homemade cards, and a monetary donation. We try to help as much as we can and always want our Heroes to know that we are thinking about them and praying for them.
We also honour our SuperHeroes - beautiful Heroes who have gained their angel wings while fighting and we try to honour these children in everything that Little Hands does. We hold toy drives, loonie collections, awareness walks and other important events in their honour with the hope of remembering and strengthening their legacies.
We often get messages from individuals nominating a child to become a Little Hands Hero, but they happen to live outside of our area. This does not stop us from honouring those children. We send each child a 'Smile Package' containing a Hero shirt, a letter of encouragement and homemade cards made by local children and schools. We have dozens and dozens of 'Honourary Heroes' all over Canada and the world! Every Hero deserves to have their journey recognized.
If you know of a child from the Windsor-Essex County area or beyond who is battling a life-threatening illness and who you would like to nominate as a Little Hands Hero, please contact us. We would be happy to talk to you.
